12 December 2017 (ACMA media release) – The Australian Communications and Media Authority’s (ACMA) Communications Report for 2016-17 shows that Australians are downloading, consuming and creating more content than ever before, with more than 3.1 million terabytes downloaded in the June 2017 quarter alone.

The majority of the data was downloaded over fixed line broadband, accounting for 92 per cent.

Other key insights include:                                                                                         

  • 89 per cent of Australian adults are accessing the internet, with 100 per cent saturation in the 18-34 range
  • Mobiles are the most popular device to access the internet and smart TVs are becoming mainstream.
  •  The number of internet subscriptions – both mobile and fixed – in Australia increased by 5.2 per cent on the previous year to 40.08 million at June 2017.
  • Fixed-line telephones continue to decline with over 6.7 million Australians now mobile phone-only
  • Almost 60 per cent of Australians watched online content in June 2017
  • NBN activations were up 122 per cent to over 2.4 million in the 12 months to June 2017, and are now sitting at over three million as at December 2017
  • Mobile services climbed three per cent to June 2017
  • 4G mobile networks now cover 96 to 99 per cent of the Australian population.
