ASEAN Confers First Peoples’ Award 2015

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 21 (Bernama) — In commemorating the establishment of the ASEAN Community end of this year, ASEAN will for the first time award and honour ASEAN Member States’ individuals or organisations who have made outstanding contributions toward the creation of a united, prosperous and caring ASEAN Community with the theme “Building A Vibrant And Resilient ASEAN Community”.

ASEAN Peoples’ Award is an award that appreciates and promotes the achievements and inspiring contributions of individuals or organisations of ASEAN Member States in a broader latitude to community building effort, including, among others, in the areas of political, social and cultural development, economic integration, youth and livelihood, education, volunteerism, community development and empowerment.

This year, ASEAN Peoples’ Award will be awarded to 10 ASEAN Member States’ organisations and/or individuals as follows:-

Brunei – Persatuan Basmi Dadah (BASMIDA)

Cambodia – Union of Youth Federations of Cambodia (UYFC)

Indonesia – Prita Kemal Gani

Lao PDR  – Thasano Rice Research and Seed Multiplication Center

Malaysia  – The Late Tun Muhammad Ghazali Shafie (posthumously)

Myanmar – Parami Roundtable Group

Philippines  – Ray Paolo J. Santiago

Singapore – Singapore Polytechnic (ASEAN Outreach Thrust)

Thailand –  Dr. Saisuree Chutikul

Vietnam –  Nguyen Manh Cam

The 10 National Recipients were selected by each ASEAN Member State which had been given the mandate to select one National Recipient to be honoured for the award. The recipient will be given a trophy and awarded a grant of US$ 10,000 to support and encourage the efforts to continuously work and contribute towards ASEAN community building process.

For Malaysia, the late Tun Muhammad Ghazali bin Shafie will receive the award posthumously. The giving of this respected award is to honour and commemorate the inspiring achievement and long-lasting contribution he had made in many fields including in civil service, nation-building, politics and diplomacy at national, regional as well as international arenas. However, most significant was his contribution to the creation and establishment of ASEAN itself.

To further promote the contributions and achievements of the 10 National Recipients, an exhibition showcasing their work and achievements will be held in conjunction with the award presentation ceremony throughout the 27th ASEAN Summit Kuala Lumpur Convention Center.
