An anti-Islam protest being staged by a lone woman outside a mosque in the United States ended after members of the community came to engage her in a discussion about her views, and one Muslim woman walked over to give her a hug and invite her inside.

Photos of the hug have gone viral around the world this week, a stark demonstration of the power of open communication and friendship.

Hate-filled e-mails and threatening phone calls had been arriving for months at Noor Islamic Cultural Centre in Columbus, Ohio before mosque’s leaders found out an anti-Islam protest was scheduled for last weekend. They alerted police and prepared for the worst.
