Applications open for first ASEAN People’s Awards, with US$10,000 in prize money each

JAKARTA, (ASEAN secretariat News) – The search is on for the Recipients of the ASEAN People’s Awards. Ten outstanding individuals and/or organisations from ASEAN Member States will be honoured for their contributions to ASEAN community building. The Recipients will be recognized at the next ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur this November where their work will also be exhibited to the public. The awarding ceremony will be held at the sidelines of the 27th ASEAN Summit in Malaysia to be witnessed by the Leaders of ASEAN.

ASEAN launches People’s Awards; Recipients to be honoured at next Summit

The ASEAN People’s Awards will appreciate and promote the achievements and inspiring contributions of organisations and/or citizens to ASEAN community building efforts in the areas of political, social and cultural development, economic integration, youth, livelihood, education, volunteerism, community development and empowerment, among others.

Public or private organisations, economists who have invented small scale financial schemes to assist the poor and underserved people, lecturers or teachers who have performed excellently, lawyers and advocates who have advocated for the marginalised and vulnerable segment of population, photographers or artists who have produced their artworks in promoting peace and national unity and members of mass or business organizations and others, including civil society organisations (CSOs) that may have performed beyond expectation are examples of the wide range of individuals or organisations that may come within the perimeters for the awards. The categories are endless and non-exhaustive.The Recipients will be awarded with a trophy and cash grant of USD10,000 each. One Recipient from each Member State will be selected by the respective National ASEAN Secretariats.”

ASEAN turns 48 this year and we want to recognise the exemplary organisations and individuals that have contributed significantly to our community building efforts in various areas and capacities,” said H. E. Le Luong Minh, Secretary-General of ASEAN. “The ASEAN People’s Awards is a celebration of the region’s wealth of exceptional talents, creativity and innovation. The Awards will be a timely prelude to the establishment of ASEAN Community by the end of 2015,” he continued.

Nominations may be submitted by individuals or organisations to the National ASEAN Secretariat in each ASEAN Member State following the required documentation. Only citizens of or organisations registered with ASEAN Member States are qualified for nominations.

The ASEAN People’s Awards was formally announced in April by Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak during the opening of the 26th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur.
