The spectre haunting Europe today is the sceptre of a terminal, and possibly irreversible, decline of its economic, political and, above all, cultural influence in the world. How serious is its existential angst? George Steiner, a much-acclaimed novelist, critic, cultural philosopher and academic, seeks to answer this question with unmatched eloquence, erudition and sensitivity. Earlier this year he published a slim (and prohibitively expensive) volume containing a single essay on The Idea of Europe. He highlights the characteristics, both material and abstract, that account for the uniqueness of that Idea. And he reflects on the factors that threaten to emasculate it.
