Magaluf declared ‘mature tourist zone’ in crackdown on drunken excess – The Guardian

Authorities in Magaluf will on Friday announce plans aimed at ridding the resort of its image as a place for alcohol-fuelled, sexually charged debauchery, especially among young British holidaymakers.

Officials have also appealed to British police to help patrol Magaluf and its main tourist strip, Punta Ballena, after officers from France and Germany were brought in last year to help keep the peace.

The attempt to clean up Magaluf follows an incident over the summer when a video of an 18-year-old woman performing oral sex on 24 men to win a free drink at a bar went viral on the internet and made headlines around the world.

Calvià, the municipality on Mallorca that includes Magaluf, is drawing up new laws that would ban pub crawls and the consumption of alcohol in the street.
