Film Festival Director Seeks Expanded Support for Independent Filmmakers

New York, NY (PRWEB) May 08, 2014 – The New York City Independent Film Festival has a new crowd funding campaign. The aim is to support more filmmakers than ever before. The festival started in 2009 and grew fast. “In the first few years, I kept the festival alive myself“, said Dennis Cieri, Executive director of the festival. “At this point of time, the festival has gotten too big to handle on my own. I definitely need help.”

Dennis Cieri, Executive Director of the NYC Indie Film Festival

This festival strives to be different than other film festivals. “We don’t chase money like Cannes and we don’t preview the upcoming blockbusters like Tribeca. We gather movies from around the globe that you won’t find anywhere else. We seek untold stories and unspoken voices. That’s how we hope to discover the future stars”, claims Dennis.

For many filmmakers, film festivals are the best way to reach large audiences and get exposure. Going to festivals also provide the indie filmmakers the opportunity to network and get feedback on their work. Dennis explains that many filmmakers cannot afford to make it to New York. “For some filmmakers even our low submission fees are an insurmountable expense”, he says.

With the fund raised, the festival intends to take more submissions for free, offers prizes for the best films and also, for the first time, bring selected filmmakers to New York. “Tickets and accommodation are huge expenses. I don’t want a great filmmaker, and a possible future star, to miss this amazing opportunity because they can’t afford the costs”, he states. Dennis is eager to discover the next Scorsese, Stallone or Coppola.
