China Promotes Golf as a Game of Peace

By Gao Qihui

Beijing, 2013-09-19 (chinadaily.com.cn) – The consensus that sports can play an important role in promoting world peace was echoed by participators in a charity golf event on Wednesday in Beijing.

The 14th “Peace Cup” International Golf Tournament, a non-professional event, attracted a lot of golf lovers from different circles and countries to promote world peace and charity.

“I think sport is an important part to promote world peace, because everyone understands sport and sport speaks for itself,” said James Donaldson, a former NBA player. “This event just brought people together from all over the world to show we can do many good things.”

Donaldson’s view was echoed by the Tunisian Ambassador to China, Tarek Amri.

“I think through sport we can have this kind of peaceful competition,” said Amri during the awards ceremony.

Amri also praised the event for providing an opportunity to meet different people and friends.

In the eyes of Nguyen Van Tho, Vietnam’s ambassador to China, China and Vietnam also can cooperate with each other on the sports field. “We have sent some students to China to learn from them,” he said.

During the event, participants also made donations for the teen drug addicts in Maldives.

The event, with a theme of “promoting peace through sport, promoting cooperation through commonweal and promoting, jointly building the global city”, was co-sponsored by Beijing Investment Promotion Bureau, Beijing Association of Enterprises with Foreign Investment, Beijing International Peace Culture Foundation and China World Peace Foundation.
