Out of the rubble, a world in fear of itself – Sydney Morning Herald

September 11 was the last hurrah of bin Laden’s band of gangsters, who spent their last years watching and making onanistic videotapes. Their delusions looped the loop and met up with the wackiest of ours. Did al-Qaeda really destroy the Twin Towers, or was it the CIA? Dick Cheney? International Jewry?

In some ways, the Islamist terrorism of 2001 already seems as bottled in the past as the communist scares of the 1950s, except that our soldiers are still in Afghanistan, the US Treasury is sucked dry, and every fancy shopping centre from Mumbai to Manila to Manhattan is guarded by uniformed men with metal detectors.
