States push for student visa change – Sydney Morning Herald

THE NSW government will join with Victoria to push for wider changes to visa restrictions after the federal government was accused of ”effectively strangling” the overseas student market.

Only weeks after Canberra said it would fast-track student visas and give foreign students two years of post-study work – provided they graduated with a degree – the Victorian Premier, Ted Baillieu, said the changes did not go far enough and would threaten the international education industry. NSW and Victoria attract two-thirds of international students coming to Australia.

Foreign students brought $6.5 billion into NSW’s economy last year, and $5.8 billion into Victoria.
