Shichahai wants college graduates as pedicab drivers – foreigners welcome

(People’s Daily Online) July 16, 2014 – An official pedicab team in Shichahai of Beijing’s Xicheng District is planning to recruit drivers with a college diploma. Male, female, and even foreign candidates can apply for the post.

According to a person in charge, the pedicab team is called “Houhai Baye”, referring to eight pedicab drivers with Beijing hukou (residence). They take their passengers on hutong tours and tell the history of old Beijing. However, the oldest driver is nearly 60 years old now and the youngest is over 40. Although they love this job, they need successors. Too many private pedicab drivers in the Shichahai area are of low quality, and some even cheat their passengers.

Many college graduates have sent their resumes since the recruitment started. They are in good physical condition and have strong language capabilities. The team has relaxed the citizenship, residence, and gender restrictions, and college graduates who are interested can send their resumes to shichahai@shichahaitour.com.

The purpose of recruiting foreigners is to provide drivers who can communicate with foreign tourists with no language barriers.

Candidates will receive assessments including physical, technical, and language tests in the middle of July. Qualified candidates will take historical and cultural training before they start work. The pedicab team will offer food and accommodation to the employees. The basic salary is 5,000 yuan per month, plus commission and social insurance.
